The concept of a football transfer was first born in England after the Football Association (FA) introduced player registration after 1885. Previously, a player could agree to play one or more matches for a football club. After recognizing professionalism in 1885,[2] the FA tried to control professional players by instituting a system of player registration. Players had to sign up for a club each season, even if it stayed with the same club as the previous season. A player has not been allowed to play until he has been registered for this season. Once registered with a club, a player was not allowed to be registered or play for another club in the same season, without the permission of the FA and the club that had his registration.
